Description

An intimate resort.

After discovering the everyday world of Marie-Antoinette prior to her departure on October 5th, 1789, visitors can now learn more about other personalities who have, over the centuries, lived and transformed the small Louis XV château.

The Petit Trianon was primarily an ornamental garden and the site of botanical experimentation for Louis XV. Gradually, the king decided, encouraged by Madame de Pompadour, to enhance the setting with a small castle. It was built between 1762 and 1768, transforming the spot into a more intimate resort, which permitted him to get away from the official Château, without having to travel too far away.

Historically, the Petit Trianon was especially influenced by the presence of Marie-Antoinette, who took possession in 1774. After the turmoil of the revolutionary period, Napoleon gave the site to his sister, the Princess Pauline Borghese. Later on, Louis-Philippe presented the estate to his son, the Duke of Orleans.

The Empress Eugenie, wife of Napoleon III, later rehabilitated the Petit Trianon by hosting an exhibition paying tribute to Marie-Antoinette.

The Petit Trianon was reopened to the public on Oct. 2, 2008. Located in the heart of the National Estate of Versailles, the Petit Trianon has been fully restored thanks to sponsorship by the Montres Breguet company, a great Ministry of Culture and Communication patron.
