Description

A town and its port.

Since the Gallo-Roman period, Vannes has been a place of maritime trade. The old port would have been located then on the outskirts of the prefecture, at the foot of the hill of Boismoreau where the ancient site extended to. At the end of the 14th century, it was probably between La Place de la Poissonnerie and the bottom of Rue Thiers. In the 17th century, it was located to the south of the walled town and maritime trade was at its peak. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the docks were extended and the ship building activity was extensive. The start of the 19th century marked a turning point with the tunnelling of the Kérino mound in order to keep the maritime trade. Nowadays, the port ensures the transport of goods and tourists.
