The commune of Saint-Omer, surrounded by expansive marshlands, is place with a Medieval feel to it. The traditional houses in Lyzel and Haut-Pont, for example, contribute to this overall historic atmosphere.

The place seems to be caught between 18th century bourgeois architecture, Flemish influence and the imposing, unchangeable style of Medieval constructions. Labelled a city of art and history, Saint-Omer is dominated by an imposing Gothic cathedral and boasts numerous heritage sites: the Hôtel Sandelin museum, the ruins of the Saint-Bertin abbey, the local gardens, etc.
