Nevers is the cradle of France's high-grade bovine meat, the famed Charolais beef, yet Nevers was also for a time (in the late 16th century) the capital of pottery. This can be attributed to the Conrade brothers who set up shop there around that time. By the 17th century the city had become the number one national producer.
