Description

The wild beauty of the coastline.

A calanque is a cove or inlet, often with steep sides: the Mediterrenean equivalent of a fjord. The Calanques of Marseille are some of the area's most beautiful spots. Tour boats always stop there but the best way to explore them is actually on land. To the south of Marseille, towards Cassis, the calanques run along 20km of craggy coastline. The views are fantastic, the nature is wild, and the flora and fauna are unique. In Luminy, you will discover the Sugiton calanque. For nearly an hour, you will walk through the middle of a Mediterranean landscape. Then, at a bend, the blue ocean will appear before you.

Your discovery of the calanques does not have to end here, however. Explore the Goudes, Sormiou, the small port of Callelongue or Marseilleveyre. The sea is clear and the the scent of pine trees drifts on the breeze.

A regional park is due to open in April 2012, to protect the rare beauty of this exceptional area.
