Description

An iconic prisoner.

It's not by chance that Château d’If is one of the most visited sites in Marseille! It's because visitors like you are looking for the famous "Man in the Iron Mask"! Because this is where the cult character would have stayed as a prisoner between 1669 and 1703, in this 16th century fortress, built at the request of Francis I.
While there are many theories about his identity, it is the one posited by Dumas in his novel "The Vicomte of Bragelonne," the continuing and final adventure of the 3 Musketeers, which still resonates in popular memories today. To make up your own mind, go and wander through the corridors of this iconic prison.
