In the eastern part of the Oise department, Compiègne, whose name derives from the Latin 'compendium' (short cut), is situated on the left bank of the river, at the confluence of the Aisne and the Oise. It was renamed Marat-sur-Oise during the Revolution and is the site of a number of events that marked the history of France and Europe: the capture of Joan of Arc, the birth of the franc, the signing of the armistice of the First World War and, in 1940, of the war with Germany.
