Brive-la-Gaillarde is so named because it is indeed gaillard, or "hardy", due to its fortified nature. Local inhabitants proved their courage in the Second World War when they took back their own city in August, 1944.

The sub-prefecture of the Corrèze county (crossed by the Corrèse river) boasts a pleasant climate and beautiful natural surroundings. The local Book Fair and a number of other fairs, sports events and markets have made Brive a great place for visitors to discover the French countryside.
