The town’s name comes from the Corsican word for a fortress, a bastia. As the prefecture of the Haute-Corse department, Bastia is built around a citadel and is notable for its steep, narrow streets, greyish-blue shale roofs and the ever-lively Place Saint-Nicolas.

With its elegant Baroque architecture, Bastia is full of charm and steeped in history.
