Description

One of the better preserved Carolingian monuments in France.

Starting from the 5th century, a first basilica was built in the environs of Angers. In the 10th century, a new construction was erected on this site: its outlines are quite similar to those of the present collegiate.
The Count Foulques Nerra and his wife Hildegarde, noticing that the church was "so destroyed that barely two priests could serve God there" financed the reconstruction works at the beginning of the 11th century.

In the second half of the 12th century, additional renovation works were to give to the collegiate a large part of its present appearance, in the Angevin Gothic style.
