Built by the Romans and named Samarobriva, Amiens stretches along the river Somme only a hundred or so kilometres from Paris. Today it is the capital of the Picardie region and boasts the largest Gothic cathedral in France - it also the hometown of adventure novelist Jules Verne.

Between the Saint-Leu quarter, the marshes used for vegetable farming and the town centre, Amiens attracts visitors with its warm character and delicious local specialities, such as the oven-baked crêpe known as a ficelle picarde.
