According to historic records, Ajaccio was named after Ajax, a Greek hero of the Trojan War who, as legend has it, founded the town. Ajaccio is also famous for being the birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte. The town is situated on the west coast of Corsica, at the northern tip of a bay. The prefecture of the South Corsica department, Ajaccio owes its growth to tourism, its busy fishing port and the service industry.
Follow in the footsteps of France's legendary pint-sized Emperor as you explore the town's monuments.
